Distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving. Distraction occurs any time you take your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel and your mind off your primary task of driving safely. All distractions endanger driver, passenger and bystander safety. These types of distractions include:
Making Phone Calls
Eating or Drinking
Texting while driving requires visual, manual and cognitive attention from the driver. It is, by far, the most alarming distraction.
The best way to help fight distracted driving is to get informed. Hickory Falls is educating our students in community High Schools about the risks and dangers that distracted driving poses.
When visiting Hickory Falls, our guests have the opportunity to view informational videos about the serious outcomes when driving while being distracted. Hickory Falls has partnered with the Penn Township Fire and Police Departments and local school districts to educate young adults on the dangers of distracted driving.
By doing so, students have the opportunity to drive the Hickory Falls Distracted Driving go-kart through a road course with and without impairments utilizing “drunk goggles”. Each cone throughout the road course represents another person, car or structure and provides them with a “hands on” approach of their personal driving skills while texting or driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
